Visionary Surveillance (Part 2)

By Graeme • November 24th, 2009

Your surveillance department vision must solve a problem. If you’re a surveillance manager, then I’m sure you can list a number of problems that exist in your department. However, as Willy Allison says in “Using Software to Enhance Surveillance Customer Service“, “surveillance exists because gaming exists”. Therefore, you need to become a good listener of the gaming department’s problems. Your surveillance department vision must be a solution to gaming’s biggest problem. The benefits are twofold:

  • Gaming will be your biggest supporter (I wonder if there’s a casino out there where “successful gaming exists because great surveillance exists” )
  • Your department will have a real sense of purpose and look forward to coming to work (I was once part of a team that added tremendous value to the organization and we were often seen as the heroes)

As leaders we often fall into the trap of giving answers to questions that no one is asking. One of the reasons the people around us are not energized around a vision is because the vision has been presented before the problem the vision is designed to solve.

Point to consider number 2: Define the problem your vision is going to solve
